The best seasons for Kanchenjunga base camp & Lumba-Sumba-La Trek:
For this classic adventure to Kanchenjunga Base Camp with Lumba-Sumba-La Pass Treks. The best times are spring and autumn/fall seasons, from March to May, and September to November.
Springtime with longer sunny days, is the best season for treks around the Himalayas. But cold mornings, late afternoons, and nighttime can expect snowfall sometimes. During spring from March to May, the whole valley and hills will be ablaze with wildflowers in full bloom. Especially the rhododendrons of various species and colors from tall trees to bush, as well the national flowers of Nepal.
The next best time is autumn from September to November, most days are fine and clear. But shorter sunlight hours, much cold morning and late afternoon until nighttime. Can expect snowfall sometimes above 3,000 m high on walks and crossing Lumba Sumba pass.
Geographical Landscapes & Vegetation:
Nepal is a landlocked country with the world’s highest peaks and mountain range known as the Himalayas’. The country with five categories of landscapes from the lowlands of the Terai belt. Which extends from east to far west, then towards north starting with Siwalik / Churi Hills. Then stretches to the Mahabharata range of high mid-hills and continues towards higher hills and ridges, known as Greater Mahabharata.
The landscape ends with a massif of mountains, the Himalayas amidst, a range of snow peaks. The treks take you towards the Far North East Himalayas and beyond from the Kanchenjunga areas close en route Tibet frontier. At Walangchung Gola, located on the remote northern corners of Kanchenjunga and Taplejung district.
This wonderful adventure takes you from low warmer sub-tropical areas of the Terai belt to cooler alpine hills. Nepal’s best Tea Garden is located around the hills and valleys of Ilam district. As the journey heads toward the Kanchenjunga areas of Taplejung district. The adventure then begins towards a cold arctic zone of ice and glaciers reaching first at Kanchenjunga south base camp.
In the beginning, the trail follows through lush vegetation and farm areas around remote corners of Taplejung and Kanchenjunga region. The walk leads to lovely forests of rhododendrons, blue pines, and firs with oaks, hemlocks, and magnolia. Above 3,000 m the tree lines drop for short alpine bush of juniper and azalea. The high country of green hills to sheer mountain wilderness of arid terrain landscapes. From tall tree lines to remorseless fields of ice and glaciers close en route to Kanchenjunga South and at Pang Pema Kanchenjunga North Base Camp.
The adventure continues heading beyond the Kanchenjunga massif mountain range, towards the north on the ancient Trans Himalaya Salt Trade route. Reaching Walangchung Gola, located on the far north of Taplejung district around the northern side of Mt. Kanchenjunga. Which is en route to Nepal and eastern Tibet borders, where trade was active in the early days. At present trading and bartering still exist, but in smaller ways than in the past decades. Fascinating country to explore dramatic changes of landscapes from cooler hills to high arctic terrain around pristine wilderness.
Religion, Cultures, and History:
Nepal with two major religions Hinduism and Buddhism, mostly populated by Hindus of approx. 70 %. Includes Buddhism of 25 % the rest 5 % are other minor religions. But the higher hills and mountainous regions are inhabited by Buddhist followers. On this trek and climb of Bokta Peak, trekkers will come across villages steeped with Buddhist monuments and monasteries. The upper high region of Taplejung and Kanchenjunga areas populated by the highlanders. The Sherpa and the Bhotias of Tibetan origin, the heritage and cultures are linked with their Tibetan predecessors. The history of the Bhotias and Sherpa people migrated around Nepal Himalayas as early as the 6th to 7th Centuries.
However, the mid-hills tribes of the Taplejung district with mixed cultures with Hindu and Buddhism. Including the ancient practice and worship of the ancestors and nature by the main indigenous Limbu tribe of the Kirat group. Further high around the Northern side of Kanchenjunga with Tibetan origin people, practice Buddhism similar to Tibetan predecessors.
Mt. Kanchenjunga at 8,586 m/28,169 feet, stands as the world’s 3rd highest peak, first ascent on May 25th, 1955. By the British Expedition, led by the late Sir George Band, from then on the mountain is often climbed. Mt. Kanchenjunga straddles the border with Nepal and Sikkim (a small state of North East India). The actual name is Kanchendzonga comes from the Tibetan origin language, means five jewels, referring to its five main peaks.
Food & Accommodation on Kanchenjunga & Lumba-Sumba-La Trekking:
The accommodation en route Kanchenjunga base camp and Walangchung-Gola, spending overnights in a simple lodge. The first part of the journey from the Taplejung and Ilam area to the Kanchenjunga base camps. Lodges are available with minimum facilities and simple foods. All lodges provide common baths and toilets, where trekkers need to pay extra for hot showers. The lodges are very simple and basic on this trek, the best is to spend overnights in tented camping.
Native Everest provides good camping equipment, for this remote adventure destination of Kanchenjunga and beyond. The camping gear will be carried throughout the trekking duration. Includes two men’s tents, a dining tent as per the size of a group with a separate kitchen department, and toilet tents. The camping staff of cook, kitchen crew, trekking guide, and porters. The food will be a set menu cooked in the camping kitchen from LPG gas or Kerosene stoves.
The food menu is provided from Continental, Chinese, Indian, and Nepali, including Tibetan / Sherpa dishes. Staying in local lodges offers only basic foods like Nepali famous Dal Bhat. A boiled rice, and lentil soup with vegetable/ meat curry). Includes Tibetan food fried /soup noodles or dumplings / Mo-Mo either veg or meat stuffed and local breads.
Camping is most enjoyable, having great variation of foods, from breakfast, lunch and dinner with afternoon tea and snacks.

Mt. Kanchenjunga. An amazing walk through nice remote farm villages and enchanting forests covered in tall rhododendrons, pines, oaks, and fir trees. On leaving the forest reaching the mountainous areas of the arctic zone of ice and glaciers.
After a visit to the Kanchenjunga South Base Camp at Oktang and Yarlung glaciers with commanding mountain views. Then adventure leads towards our next destinations crossing the three passes over Mirgin, Sinion, and Sele-La.
As the walk continues to reach the northern side of Kanchenjunga at Ghunsa, a lovely village adorned with traditional Buddhist cultures. From here unto Lhonak and Pang-Pema Kanchenjunga North Base Camp, one of the main highlight destinations. Leaving the nice villages and beautiful forest, heading up towards barren mountain wilderness, overlooking superb views of snow peaks.
Along the walk enjoy facing Jannu Himal, Wedge peaks with arrays of towering mountains. The trail climbs to reach Lhonak, the last temporary human settlement of Yak herder. From here reach Kanchenjunga North Base Camp filled with remorseless fields of rocky moraine and glaciers. This will be one of the highest points before crossing the Lumba Sumba-La Pass after visiting Walangchung.
The final part of the adventure follows the old Trans Himalayan Salt and Caravan Route of Eastern Nepal and Tibet. Heading higher to a remote mountain village of Walangchung Gola, the door to Tibet, China frontier. Spending time to explore around this last impressive village festooned with Tibetan Buddhism culture.
Our adventure then leads to Lumba Sumba-La Pass, crossing the highest spot of the journey. Rewards mind-blowing views of surrounding beautiful landscapes with a grand vista of towering snow-capped peaks. As the views of Kanchenjunga massif follow you for some days, then the walk slowly comes to an end.
Reaching Num village, situated en route to Makalu base camp and towards the borders of Nepal and Tibet. After completing the wonderful walks an exciting drive takes you to low warm farm country at Tumlingtar.
